A beauty in a loosely worn yukata, cotton kimono, and carrying a flat fan and a lantern-shaped mosquito repellent, looks like she is about to enjoy the evening cool on the edge of the veranda. Looking out onto a tasteful garden with flowing water and willow, she appears to be about to step from the room onto the veranda. The yukata and hair pin worn in her hair bear the Ichimatsu pattern made fashionable by the stage costumes of popular actor of the time Sanogawa Ichimatsu I (1722-62), as well as the Kamezō komon, a fine pattern of big and small whirlpools from the costumes of similarly popular Ichimura Kamezō I (1725-85) – a reminder of the extent of those fashions. The elegant beauty style of Toyonobu was directly succeeded by Suzuki Harunobu of the next generation.
