Nakamura Tomijūrō I (1719-86) as a fan paper-seller, carrying a box on his back containing the surface papers to stick onto fans. In Ukiyo-e, fan paper-sellers are often depicted as iro-otoko, handsome men, drawing the eyes of women, however a close look at his hairstyle suggests he is disguised as a girl. The portrayal of slender and lightly-built actors is the style and form produced in abundance by the Torii School of this period, and was inherited in the early work of Suzuki Harunobu (1725?-70) who made his debut in the Ukiyo-e world just after this. The box containing fan papers is decorated with the yaguruma, arrow wheel, family crest of Tomijuro, as well as the yuiwata, tied cotton, crest of Segawa Kikujirō (1715-57) and Segawa Kikunojō II (1741-73), while the fan he holds in his hand shows Ichikawa Ebizō (1688-1758) as Yanonegorō. This suggests the possibility of a play of that name in which he performed alongside these other three, yet such a play has not been found.
