The large design of the morning sun and crows on the outer garment appears to portray “Hatsu garasu”, hearing the auspicious sound of a crow calling, as the messenger of the gods, at sunrise on New Year’s Day. It likely depicts the grand attire of a courtesan at the New Year. Although Eizan’s hand-paintings are few in number, we can acknowledge him as an artist with undoubted skills. In contrast to the powerful lines seen in her clothes, the depiction of the facial features and hair is carried out carefully and has an intricate beauty. Particular attention was given to the drawing of the design of the gorgeous garment in this work, and can be seen as a work of extraordinary determination. Faint red has been added to the white skin of the eyelids and cheeks on the courtesan’s face, and her lips are made up in sasairo (metallic green) rouge.
