A humorous picture scroll depicting the three gods of good fortune, Ebisu, Daikoku and Fukurokuju from their traveling up the Sumida river towards the Yoshiwara, to their amusements there. At Yanagibashi, the three gods of fortune are guided by a boathouse proprietress who is carrying a match box (for collecting kindling or pennies) written with “Fukukichi (Fortune and happiness)”, and board a “chokibune (boar-tusk)” boat (so named because the stern resembles the two tusks of a boar). They go past Shubi no Matsu, Komagata-dō and Azuma-bashi, and the boat arrives at Sanyabori below Matsuchiyama Shōden-gū (Honryū-in Temple) from where the torii gate of Mimeguri-jinja Shrine can be seen on the opposite bank. From here the three gods of fortune are depicted walking along Nihonzutsumi, until they eventually turn at the “Mikaeri yanagi (Looking-back willow tree)” and descend Emonzaka that leads to the Great Gate, the only way in and out of the Yoshiwara. This work, once inside the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters, largely depicts the characters; however, it does render the cherries said to have been planted along Nakano-chō, the main street, each year, and the three gods of fortune look out from a hikite-jaya (tea-house for arranging meetings) at a procession of beautiful courtesans. Although it was usual for such customers to call courtesans into the hikite-jaya tea-house, here, next comes an additional scene of the three gods of fortune gazing through the grille displaying prostitutes in a brothel. Lastly, at a banquet with courtesans, geisha and male entertainers, Fukurokuju performs a dance. It is humorous that a young man carrying in a stand (of food) holds a lantern bearing the name “Daikoku-ya”, and also that a dish of sea bream is place beside Ebisu. The hanging scroll in the tokonoma alcove is painted with a jewel, and bears the signature and seal of Eishi.
